USS Oriskany

What a shame…

Later this year, the Mighty O is scheduled to become an artificial reef off the coast of Pensacola. Execpt for the divers and anglers - out of sight, out of mind.

Just think of what could’ve been done with this floating piece of American history:

  • A Museum
  • A Hotel
  • Resturants
  • Shopping
  • Nightclubs
  • A swimming pool on the flight deck
  • Etc.

All bundled together in the belly of a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars.

Could’ve done a lot more for the local economy than a hunk of steel at the bottom of the ocean.

It will be used to test the ability of a carrier to take damage, which is why it will become a reef. Since its design closely resembles that of the current carriers it should give the Navy a good idea of how a carrier would actually respond to battle damage. Overall it is doing a lot to contribute to saving lives in the future, and for that I am willing to sacrifice a few million dollars in revenue.

I’m sure that there are many more benefits than what I’ve researched, I just like to explore the “what-ifs” :)
